Advanced Techniques for Hair Restoration



Minoxidil was the first FDA approved treatment for hair loss. This topical medication is safe to use for both men and women. It has shown positive results in individuals facing early hair fall symptoms. However, for patients above the age of 40 or with severe hair loss, the effectiveness of this treatment diminishes.


Finasteride is another FDA approved treatment for men. It brings about hormonal changes in the body to prevent hair loss. Though effective, this oral medication has some serious side effects as well. 

Both Minoxidil and Finasteride show significant results when used regularly and properly. But surveys share that around 84.4% of the patients do not take medications before seeking a hair transplant. This signifies that hair shedding is not taken seriously by most of the patients until it’s too late.   

2.Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment  

Along with being a possible solution to androgenetic alopecia, this method is also adapted in cosmetic surgeries, treatment of acute injuries and several other conditions. For hair restoration, PRP therapy involves drawing some blood (around 20 milliliters) out of the patient’s body and placing it in a centrifuge.

The centrifuge then separates the nutrient-rich plasma out of the blood which is injected into the area with less hair or balding. This injected plasma then works to activate the dormant hair follicles and hence, hair growth is stimulated.   

3.Hair Cloning 

The Stem Cell hair transplant method is still undergoing the experimental stage but is forecasted to be a reliable solution to hair regeneration in the coming future. Hair cloning involves extracting a small number of hair follicles from the donor area. These follicles are then harvested and multiplied in a laboratory, sometimes even with artificial skin. Later, the implantation of hair follicles is carried out following the same method as FUT or FUE. 

The hair cloning technique makes transplantation with fewer hair follicles a possibility. Nevertheless, since this method is still under observation, deciding its long-term benefits would be too early. 

4.FUT vs FUE 

Before 2016, FUT was the most popular technique in the hair transplant industry. However, with the emergence of FUE in recent years, more patients are seen interested in this method. The reason? FUE is minimally invasive and delivers natural results.     

During FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area, harvested and then implanted into the recipient channels. Unlike FUT, in which a strip of skin is removed to extract hair grafts leaving behind visible scars. 

Manual FUE vs Automated FUE 

Since FUE is a complex surgery, it consumes more time and effort of the surgeon. This leads to bounding the physician to perform only 2 to 3 surgeries a day. Consequently, the patients are charged with high sums.

However, one of the best advancements in the hair transplantation industry is the introduction of automated FUE techniques. The adoption of technology has made FUE less labor-intensive, timesaving and more effective. Hence, installing advanced equipment means doctors can see more patients per day which will allow them to perform surgeries at a comparatively low cost. 

The two latest modifications in FUE method are: 

NeoGraft: The NeoGraft sessions involve using a piston-driven motor to maintain accurate pressure during the extraction and implantation of follicles. The touchscreen interface curbs chances of error to a minimum and enables the surgeon to deliver consistent results.
