  The skin protects our body and acts as a shield against the sun, injuries, and other infections. It stores water and fat and regulates body temperature.  There are various other functions for skin which consists of different layers. It has adapted itself to various textures and thickness throughout the body.

Different Skin Types And How To Take Care Of Them

Speaking of skin types, most of them are affected by other factors, but they can also be determined by genetics. There are 5 main types of skin. In this article, we will discuss the different types of skin and the problems associated with them.

Normal Skin

A person with normal skin is regarded to be very lucky. They do not have to suffer with the problems of being too oily or too dry. They have a soft appearance and do not need any special care. They do not have to worry about a lot of skin problems. All they have to do is take good care of their skin to retain its texture and durability.

Oily skin

People with these skin types will have excessive fat production by the sebaceous gland.  They are necessary to maintain healthy skin. However, excess production can make skin oily and greasy. Some signs of oily skins are, stickiness, frequent breakouts, enlarged pores, and make-ups that slip away

Acne is a common skin problem of oily skin. The sebaceous glands produce sebum which carries to the surface of the skin. They contain oil and dead skin which create pores on the skin. Acnes are very common in teenagers and young adults. There are many ways to treat acne. Dry Skin

This skin type is mainly due to dry environment, dehydration, and rough jobs like mechanical work or farming. Some get it during winter seasons due to the cold. Harsh soaps and detergents are also one reason for dry skin. The skin looks rough with lines or cracks in them.  There can be itching and severe flaking with redness in between.

In certain cases, dry skin can lead to other skin diseases. One main disease is eczema. In this condition, there will be redness, cracking, and inflammation in the skin. There will be frequent itching and scaly skin. Contact dermatitis is another condition when there will be an allergic reaction when foreign substances come in contact with dry skin.

Dry skin on the scalp can cause dandruff. It is a condition called Seborrheic dermatitis. It causes flaky skin on the inside of the legs, grins, and hands. One reason for the athlete’s foot is dry skin. Older people are more prone to have dry skins due to the exhaustion of sweat glands and the loss of fat in the skin.

Therefore, dry skin is not as simple as it seems. It is important to take care of it with proper moisturizers and home remedies.

Sensitive Skin

It is a fragile skin type where instant reactions to stimuli can be expected. They react very quickly to chemicals, dyes, and even certain medications, which normal skin does not. Burning sensation, rashes, redness, and itchiness are some signs of sensitive skin. Many skin specialists say that sensitive skin is due to some prevailing disease.

A person with sensitive skin should be very careful around foreign objects like jewelry, make-up, chemicals, etc. They should be aware of what makes their skin sensitive and abstain from using that. . They should use mild soaps that do not wash away any healthy oils of the skin. A moisturizer that lasts all day and locks in all the moisture should be used.

Combination Skin

People with these skin types have a  combination of oily and dry skins. In most cases, there is an at-zone from the forehead to the chin which is usually oily. People with combination skin have to take care of themselves with different products. For instance, they should apply more moisturizes in the dry areas and less on oily areas.

However, there is no perfect available solution to conquer the combined skin. People with combined skin also have acne problems.


The skin type of people varies from place to place. People belonging to different regions on earth have different types of skin. For instance, people who live in hotter places have relatively dark skins on being exposed to the sun. Whereas people in colder areas have whiter skins. A warmer climate can make skin more oil than colder places.

Whatever be it, it is very important to develop a routine to have glowing skin.
